Our modern diet usually lacks in fibre, as
most of it is removed from the cereals including floor by hulling, refining
and peeling of fruit and vegetables before consuming them. Studies in the
field of biochemistry and medicine have led to the conclusion that the fibre
content of our food plays an important role in the natural functioning of
the body. Lack of dietary fibre leads to innumerable health disorders
resulting in chronic headache, pyorrhoea, dental decay, obesity,
appendicitis, polyps, constipation and other bowel disorders.

Psyllium
Husk is a natural agent to provide sufficient dietary fibre to the fibre
deficient food. Psyllium Husk is a complete natural fibre and does not
contain any additives or preservatives. Psyllium has a long history of use
throughout the world. Psyllium has been used in traditional medicine in
India and finds mention in ancient Indian Ayurvedic prescriptions. Psyllium
is also known to be used in China, US, & Europe.
Pharmacological action: Psyllium husks are pure dietary fiber,
composed mostly of hemicellulose. They act as a sponge in the intestinal
tract, swelling as they absorb water and waste material in the bowels. Hence
forming a soft, bulky mass that passes through the colon faster (keeping
potentially toxic waste from depositing in the colon) and passes out
smoothly and easily.
Psyllium husk is used as emollient, demulcent and laxative and in the
treatment of chronic constipation, amoebic and bacillary dysentery diarrhoea
due to irritative conditions of gastronintesna tract its action is purely
mechanical and is due to large amount of mucilage contained.

According to Ayurved and Unani System of medicine, Psyllium is cooling,
soothing, & softening substance and prevents acidity.
